Your goal in Towers of Sifnos is to have the most victory points (VP) at game’s end. Points are primarily gained by increasing your influence and successfully defending the mining operations of the island’s three predominant minerals: gold, silver, and lead. Players track their influence over these minerals on their player boards. Several invasions will occur over the course of the game, granting players the opportunity to prove their proficiency and might. After each invasion, the pirates will either grow in number or much needed allied reinforcements will arrive. The game ends immediately after three waves of reinforcements have arrived at the island.

In this board game you will lead the boyar families competing for power and honor in the 16th-century Tsardom of Russia. Over four decades, you’ll collect income from estates and equip troops, trade with foreigners and fortify cities, seek privileges and carry out royal assignments. Use your influence on the tsar, bribe his minions, and perhaps it is your family that will succeed in taking the Russian throne in the next century.

The game is played over four rounds, each one representing approximately a decade of Ivan the Terrible’s reign. At the beginning of each round the players send their boyars to the Kremlin chambers, choosing their actions for the current decade.

Then the players perform the chosen actions:

• receive income from cities;
• place boyars and warriors on the map and move them;
• gain and complete construction, trade and military projects;
• exchange goods;
• acquire new titles and estates.

At the end of the round, the players with the most influence in the four regions receive additional rewards.

An important element of the game is the Tsar’s favour,
which is used to resolve all ties.

At the end of the game, the player with the most victory points wins.

Ikusa focuses on the chaotic feudal society of Japan during the Middle Ages. Players play one of several factions that erupt into a civil war, trying to consolidate their strongholds and then defeat other armies for the right to be called Shogun, the supreme ruler.

In the game, players command forces on islands of feudal Japan. Player forces include provincial forces in the provinces and mobile armies commanded by daimyos. In each turn, players will allocate their koku into bids and purchases for the round. The round begins with the allocation of turn order, which is determined by bid, and in the case of tied bids, by player agreement or random draw. Then players other bids and payments are accounted for in purchases of castles and fortresses, drafting of new troops and ronin, and a bid for the lone ninja. Following the bids phase, players in turn order plan and execute attacks against enemy territories, with attacks resolved through die rolls.

A player wins the game when he or she has captured a certain number of territories, either via straight conquest or by vanquishing the last of an opponent’s diamyos and taking over that player’s forces.

The game was originally published as Shogun and was later changed to Samurai Swords due to a name conflict with James Clavell’s Shogun. Ikusa is the latest iteration of the game.
