The backbone of the Heer – the German Army – was its Grenadiers. These were the men in field grey and Stahlhelms who had conquered Western Europe, and brought the Soviet Union to the very brink. By the time the tide of the war began to turn in 1943, the survivors had become hard-bitten veterans, and the new replacements had to learn quickly. Well-equipped, well-trained, and led by experienced officers, Grenadier units remained dangerous opponents throughout the war.

This Starter Army allows you to field a fully legal German force for Bolt Action: Third Edition – entirely in plastic! With 36 infantry forming a Rifle Platoon, backed up by the mortar teams and machine guns of the Heavy Weapons Platoon, you’ve got a flexible core of troops ready for any tactical challenge. The Panzerschreck was a German development of the American bazooka, first encountered in North Africa, firing a large calibre shaped-charge rocket projectile. The back-blast from the weapon was so intense that early teams wore protective capes and masks – later a blast shield was fitted to the weapon giving it a distinctive appearance. The Panzerschreck and disposable anti-tank Panzerfaust had replaced the Panzerbüchse 39 anti-tank rifle by 1944.

During the battle of Stalingrad, Russian snipers took such a heavy toll upon the beleaguered Wehrmacht that the Germans began to train and equip their own marksmen to undertake a specialist role as snipers. A variety of rifles were used for sniping, including the standard KAR-98K and the semi-automatic Gewehr 43, all fitted with the high quality ZF39 telescopic sight, and equipped with precision-manufactured ammunition.

Flamethrowers – Flammenwerfer – were used through the war and were often employed against buildings or fortifications. During the latter part of the war, the Germans produced a lighter, smaller design that carried enough fuel for a single burst – effectively a one-shot flamethrower –the Eintossflammenwerfe. It is not known, however, whether this weapon was actually ever employed.

At 71 tons, the behemoth had nearly 10 inches of armour to the front of its casement housing, making it one of the most well protected tanks of the war. However, all this weight and protection came at the cost of reliability. Many roads and bridges simply couldn’t take its weight, and with only around 80 Jagdtigers reaching the front from late 1944, it could not have a decisive impact on the war.

In games of Bolt Action the King Tiger is a Super Heavy tank armed with a Super Heavy Anti-tank gun that does not suffer penetration penalties at long ranges, and can be included in Armoured Platoons.

This vehicle can also be used in games of Achtung Panzer!, the game of close-quarters tank-on-tank combat, its rules can be found in the Achtung Panzer! rulebook.

Perfect for fighting in the ruined cities of World War II, these hard-bitten veteran German troopers are packed with specialist equipment and ready to do battle!

This starter army gives you everything you need to field a battle-ready force of German veterans for games of Bolt Action. Based around a Rifle Platoon of two Heer Infantry squads, supported by an Anti-Tank Rifle team, which can take and hold objectives and provides a strong core to the army, it packs a significant punch with its specialist supporting platoons. It’s also accompanied by a Medic, whose intervention can keep your troops in the fight when the going gets tough.

The first of these is the Heavy Weapons Platoon, providing the force with strong anti-infantry firepower courtesy of a brace of Medium Machine Guns and a Medium Mortar. Ideal for creating defensive strongpoints and supporting your attacks, it’s a great counterpoint to the small but powerful Engineer Platoon. Made up of a pair of Pionier squads, each outfitted for short-range fighting and packing a lethal flamethrower, plus a separate Flamethrower Team, this platoon looks to get up close and personal, burning enemies out of their positions!

Finally, there’s the Armoured Platoon, bringing both wheels and tracks to the battlefield. The Sd.Kfz 223 command armoured car has excellent mobility, and leads the way for the powerful Panzer IV with its deadly and efficient short-barrelled howitzer!

The Iosef Stalin tank was designed to replace the old KV heavy tank and was a far better-designed machine with thick frontal armour and a huge 122mm gun. Despite this, and the heavy tank classification given to it by the Russians, the IS-2 was only of comparable weight to the German Panther. The IS-2 was intended as a breakthrough tank, so it was given a weapon suitable for firing a powerful HE round to clear out enemy strongpoints. After some indecision, the Red Army settled on the same A19 gun-howitzer that was used by the Russian artillery.

The IS-2 Heavy Tank mounts a heavy anti-tank gun in its turret making it a prime candidate to fulfil an anti-tank role in your Bolt Action Soviet Armoured Platoon. With a high Damage Value of 10+, it should also prove a significant challenge for your opponent to repel.

The box also comes with a sprue of plastic Soviet infantry poised to represent a Tank Riders squad (Armies of the Soviet Union, page 35), a small five-man squad armed with SMGs that can appropriate the IS-2 as an impromptu transport!

One of the most successful Italian armoured cars of the Second World War, the Autoblinda AB41 combined excellent mobility with reasonable armament and decent protection, making for a perfect light reconnaissance vehicle. Several hundred would be produced in both the AB41 and later AB43 variants, with the latter almost exclusively seeing service in German hands after the Italian surrender.

Armoured cars like the AB41/43 are ideal for forming Bolt Action Armoured Platoons at a lower points cost than their heavier counterparts. Packing a deadly light autocannon and with the always-useful Recce special rule, it’s a great choice for harassing enemy infantry and light armour alike.

The AB43 can also be considered for use in German armies as an addition to the Captured and Repurposed Vehicles list. Simply use the rules for the AB41/43 presented in Armies of Italy.

During the dark days of 1940, Britain was under dire threat of Nazi invasion. A massive citizen army, the Local Defence Volunteers, was raised to defend their families and homes. Although armed with old or ad hoc weapons and equipment the Home Guard, as it became known, was a vital part of the defence of British shores. Based on these proud defenders of the realm, the classic TV series, Dad’s Army produced some of television’s most enduring catchphrases and characters as it followed the adventures of Walmington-on-Sea’s Home Guard platoon.

The boxed set contains:

18 superbly detailed miniatures sculpted by Paul Hicks – representations of the cast of the classic TV series, Dad’s Army in civilian and Home Guard attire!

The boxed set contains 10 metal infantry figures each armed with an STG44 assault rifle. All figures have separate heads allowing you to build your squad in a variety of ways.
