On the 5th anniversary of the release of the best-seller by Richard Garfield, King of Tokyo gets a facelift with a new version, entirely redone by a group of artists* lead by Régis Torres, who previously illustrated the Halloween expansion pack and King of New York.

In addition to these exclusive illustrations, this new version will have a new rulebook that was reworked to be clearer, as well as two new monsters: the ever-so-popular Space Penguin (the original version, highly sought-after by players, was only available through tournaments) and Cyber Kitty.

The King, Gigazaur, Meka Dragon, and Alienoid, still defending their territory, have also benefitted from a makeover. The changes are purely aesthetic changes: the rules of the game and Power cards remain unchanged

In King of Tokyo, you play mutant monsters, gigantic robots, and strange aliens—all of whom are destroying Tokyo and whacking each other in order to become the one and only King of Tokyo.   At the start of each turn, you roll six dice, which show the following six symbols: 1, 2, or 3 Victory Points, Energy, Heal, and Attack. Over three successive throws, choose whether to keep or discard each die in order to win victory points, gain energy, restore health, or attack other players into understanding that Tokyo is YOUR territory.   The fiercest player will occupy Tokyo, and earn extra victory points, but that player can’t heal and must face all the other monsters alone!   Top this off with special cards purchased with energy that have a permanent or temporary effect, such as the growing of a second head which grants you an additional die, body armour, nova death ray, and more…. and it’s one of the most explosive games of the year!   In order to win the game, one must either destroy Tokyo by accumulating 20 victory points, or be the only surviving monster once the fighting has ended.

First, the monster Luchador enters the ring, with or without power cards depending on how you play King of… games.

Second, the expansion introduces “challenge mode”, with each monster donning a mask at the start of play. If you damage a monster in Tokyo (or New York) and that monster doesn’t retreat, you can challenge them to a one-on-one match. Each of you will play a challenge card face down, and other players can contribute challenge cards to one side of the match or the other.

Whoever pulls off the best wrestling move — a “Giant Powerhouse perhaps? — wins the match and takes the other monster’s mask, which is worth 2 VP as long as you hold it.

On the Iberian peninsula, players start the game by drafting six destination cards, then keeping four of them — a process they repeat before the train deck runs out the first time. While you’re trying to fulfil those eight destination cards with only 35 trains, you can possibly pick up festival cards along the way. The deck is seeded with 54 festival cards, and when one is drawn, you place it next to the city on the game board. If you build a route that connects to one or two cities with festival cards, you choose one of those cities and collect all of the festival cards near it. The more you collect from a city, the more they’re worth at game’s end!

In South Korea, you start the game as in Iberia by drafting six destination cards, then keeping four of them. All of the routes are grouped by colour: blue in the northeast, yellow in the northwest, and so on. When you claim a route, you can also place one of your trains on the province mat on an empty space of the matching colour showing the number of cards you played of that colour; you can play more cards than required to claim a route should you want to place on a higher number. Additionally, each player has a set of “express train” cards (+1, +2, +3), and you can spend a card on your turn to either draw more train cards, draw more destination tickets, or claim a higher number on the province mat. At game’s end, evaluate each colour on the province mat, with the player (or players) with the highest sum of values claimed earning bonus points.

The Forbidden Island itself is made up of 24 square location cards, which you’ll shuffle and arrange into a diamond, of sorts (meaning you’re getting a modular board set-up every time, which is great for replay-ability). There’s a Flood Deck of cards and a set number are revealed each turn, determining which part of the island has now become (partially or totally) flooded. There are also Treasure Cards belonging to each of the four sacred objects, and players have to acquire four of a kind (in a kind of hand-management, set-collection fashion) in order to claim the matching treasure.

Players will each get a pawn that starts on the island, and on their turn it becomes an action point allowance system, where they can take up to three actions of the following options: move to an adjacent tile, flip partially flooded tiles back to their ‘land’ side, give a Treasure Card to a fellow player, or capture a treasure at a specific location, itself. At the end of their turn, the active player will gain two Treasure Cards and then wince as they reveal cards from the Flood Deck to see what’s flooded…

If a Waters Rise! card is revealed from the Flood Deck, a corresponding Water Level marker rises (which means more cards per turn will have to be revealed), and the current discard pile of Flood Cards is shuffled and then placed on top of the remaining Flood Deck.

This is all sounding a bit Pandemic, isn’t it? And you’d be right to think so – Forbidden Island is also designed by Matt Leacock, and he’s mirrored many of the fantastic mechanics from his other hugely popular co-operative game and translated them into a simpler format.

The characters have asymmetrical player powers – just like in Pandemic – and there are various ways in which you can lose the game: if one team member is on a totally flooded tile and cannot swim to safety, if the Treasure tiles sink before you’ve claimed them, if Fool’s Landing totally sinks, or if the Water Level reaches the top.

In My First Carcassonne, the players in turn draw a landscape tile and place it; unlike in normal Carcassonne, they always match. Amongst other features, the tiles show children in the player colours on the roads. Whenever a road is finished, every player places one of their meeples on each appropriate picture.

The first player who manages to place all of their meeples wins.

The goal of Pandemic, from Z-Man Games, is relatively simple. Work together to find the cure for each of the four diseases before time runs out. Seems simple? Well, not so fast soldier!

Pandemic is a co-operative game where you must work together to identify and carry out the best strategy to getting the cures, while also fighting off the disease, managing its spread and keeping track of which cities could be infected next. Use your specialist’s strengths and skills to your advantage and stop the disease from taking over.

Each turn, a player can utilise a multitude of actions, from moving to different cities, tackling the disease head-on, building vital research centres or finding that precious cure by discarding five disease cards.

As the game progresses, the spread of the disease gets larger and the chance of an Epidemic occurring increases. Perhaps the most revolutionary element of this game is the Epidemic mechanic. Draw an epidemic card from the pile and you will infect a completely new city with three cubes, putting it on the verge of an outbreak. The infection rate increases and the disease intensifies, meaning the previously drawn “Infect City” cards are shuffled and put back on top of the deck, laying in wait to be drawn and infect at a greater rate.

If you and your team manage to keep on top of the ever-growing infection and manage to find those all-important cures, you can officially call yourselves disease control specialists. Fail, however, and you will find the world at the mercy of all four diseases, with little else that can be done to save humanity.

Pandemic is an absolute staple, a go-to game for any avid board game player and an essential for any board game collection! The co-operative element paired with the theme makes it an enjoyable, fast-paced game that can be played by all!
