In 18Lilliput, players try to build up the best railroad network by using action cards to get richer than the other players.

Every player starts with a railroad corporation and a character that gives them a special ability during the game. The game is limited to eight rounds of play, and every round, each player may select two action cards from a common pool to undertake activities on behalf of their railroads. These actions include laying new track, upgrading track, buying trains, buying new shares or opening a new company, or simply getting money into one’s personal cash or into a company’s treasury.

After the action selection phase, each company runs its trains and earns money, which can be withheld for future investments (trains, track, railheads) or paid out to the shareholders. This decision will influence the share price value of the company in question.

At the end of the game, players sum their cash on hand with the value of their shares, and whoever has the biggest total wins.

18xx players will find a lot of used and tried mechanisms, as well as many new elements, mingled into a quick and exciting card game.

What’s important is who’s in control in the long run when time travel is invented. With other time-travelers mucking with things for their own reasons, your course is clear: you will tamper with history as much as is needed, stepping on however many butterflies it takes, to get a perfect world under your own benign rule.

In Temporum, the board shows the possible paths history can take and the actual path it currently takes. On your turn, you can change history, travel through time, and visit a point in history. You draw cards, play some of them for money and abilities, and score some of them to advance your power through history. Having more power in a time period gives you abilities, but your goal is to have all of your power in the last time period, the time from which you come.

Each player has a sheet showing words written in Egyptian hieroglyphs. Players roll a die and move around a board showing the glyphs, and put a counter on their sheet as their glyphs are reached. A simplistic game, more educational than fun, but nicely packaged with the rules written on a scroll tied with ribbon.

Involving both skill and chance, the game is an entertaining introduction to one of the oldest and most beautiful of written languages. The game involves moving a scarab beetle around the board in an effort to collect the signs necessary to spell a given hieroglyphic word. Whilst attempting to do this, you are at the same time trying to thwart your opponents’ efforts to complete their words.

The game is fully cooperative, with one player taking up the mantle of a game master (GM) and giving clues to their party members, leading them through perilous missions toward the final boss. Together, they can journey through three separate campaigns, each consisting of multiple branching missions. Every mission features its own goals, and rules that tweak the standard Codenames gameplay-requiring the GM and their party to adapt and think differently to overcome the challenges at hand.

The party chooses three out of seven iconic Critical Role characters to embark on the adventure. The base game introduces Vex (and Trinket), Percy, Grog, Jester, Nott, Dorian, and Fresh Cut Grass. Players can mix and match these heroes before every new campaign, as different combinations result in distinct gameplay styles.

Playable heroes have their own cardboard miniatures to be placed on the words during guessing. Each hero also comes with personalized abilities that unlock as players collect XP from successful missions, and they can equip items that can be purchased along the way. To track XP, HP, character progression, and items, every character has their own character sheet. And yes, there is a D20 included in the box, as characters must pass their own unique skill checks that determine how well (if at all) their abilities are executed.

Normally, it’s easy to give an example of a dog breed or a frozen food – but you’ll find that your brain works differently under pressure. Flip cards until symbols on two players’ cards match. Matching players must race to give an example of the category on their opponent’s card. Whoever blurts out a correct answer first wins their opponent’s card, and drawing continues. As new first-year students at Hogwarts, players will be sorted into two rival houses, each with their own prefect who knows the secrets of the fabled school’s mystery card grid. On their turn, prefects give their team of students a clue consisting of a single word and a number suggesting how many cards are associated with that word. Students must then follow these clues to explore Hogwarts by guessing the corresponding words and revealing one card at a time.

If they’re correct, they can keep guessing words up to the stated number of times. If they encounter a card for the rival house, a dead end, locked door, or other obstacle, they’ll end their turn. Take care not to get caught by groundskeeper Argus Filch, however, as that ends the game and marks a win for the rival house. Every win also earns points for their house, which can be tracked across multiple play sessions in the House Cup.

Beneath the surface, this should sound very familiar to existing fans of Codenames—at least mechanically. Codenames: Back to Hogwarts also adds new layers of strategic depth onto the classic Codenames gameplay in the form of unique asymmetrical abilities.

Each house has access to two powerful and distinct special abilities. These abilities have been designed to meaningfully transform the fundamentals of Codenames, providing both muggles and wizards with some surprising new gameplay possibilities. Because each game features two different houses, and each house will use only one of its two abilities, there are a multitude of possible combinations for players to explore and play!

At the start of the game, each player holds three cards and on a turn a player draws one card, then plays one card. By playing cards, you can put new rules into play that change numerous aspects of the game: how many cards to draw or play, how many cards you can hold in hand or keep on the table in front of you, and (most importantly) how to win the game.

In Word Fluxx, the word-building version of the ever-changing card game, the keepers each feature a letter, and the goals involve making words of various types.
