Magic: The Gathering – Commander Intro League!

Events

Here's a new way to begin your MTG career!

Are you new to Magic: The Gathering and want to see what all the fuss is about? Have you been playing before, but never tried the ‘Commander’ format? Have you already played, but you’re looking for a less competitive format?

Then we have the events for you!

Have you never played at all? Don’t worry, we regularly run ‘learn to play’ events where we teach you and give you your first deck and booster pack, free! The next one of these is coming up soon – this Saturday 17th June from 10am to 1pm, drop in at any time to learn to play!

Already heard enough – you can turn up on the day, or you can prepay in advance and save £5!

Introducing our new Commander Intro League.

This is a one-off, 6 week event designed to get you into Commander and used to building your first deck. We may run similar in the future, but we’re unlikely to run them back to back as unlike our standard intro league, this set of starter decks won’t change very often – it might become stale if we repeat it too much.

Commander is a multi-player format for MTG. It’s a little different to usual, but don’t worry we can teach you how to play either on the night, or come to our games rooms in Bovis House on Saturday 17th June 2023, from 10am to 1pm, and we’ll show you how it works!

It will run every Tuesday from 6:45 to around 9:30, beginning Tuesday 20th June 2023

How the league works

Week 1: You choose one of the five starter Commander decks and you play 2 games of Commander! It’s that simple (to start).

But we want you to improve that basic deck – so we provide you with 2 draft boosters (actually, you get to pick which two – any draft boosters worth £5 or less).

In Commander you can only use cards of certain colours – the colours of your commander. So most of those boosters won’t be helpful, they’ll have colours that you can’t use.

But don’t worry!!! We have a plan.

You will draft those boosters. A draft is where everyone sits in a circle, you open your booster, choose a card you want (probably one of your colours) and then pass the booster on so the next person can choose one of your cards. You then get to choose a card from someone else’s booster. You keep passing those boosters round until there’s no cards left, and rather than a handful of cards you can’t use, there’s a load of cards in your colours!

The Commander deck + 2 boosters + an evening of fun will cost you £29.

We look after your deck during the week for you, and you turn up next week!

Weeks 2 to 6 – It’s the same, but you use your deck that you’re slowly improving. Each subsequent week will cost £9 for the two boosters.

At the end of the league there’ll be some modest store-credit prizes – you’re really playing for the fun and the sociability, not for any earth-shattering riches.

How do I choose which boosters to pick? First Flight

First Flight is a deck all about drawing more cards, flying, and playing instants and sorceries. So you’ll be looking for some strong fliers, or think about how you could add some life gain. March of the Machine has some good flying blue creatures in commons and uncommons that might add some variety.

How do I choose which boosters to pick? Grave Danger

Looking for more Zombies? If this is your deck, a focus on the two Innistrad sets are key – especially Crimson Vow. But you could always try and go for a different approach and add some Phyrexian Toxic to your deck.

How do I choose which boosters to pick? Chaos Incarnate

Chaos Incarnate is an odd deck – here you’re looking for cards that force creatures to attack – and there’s not much else of a theme. Just lots of good agro and direct damage to players – so that opens up the ability for you to create your own theme. Maybe look out for cards in the draft that would work well together and create your own theme.

How do I choose which boosters to pick? Draconic Destruction

The Draconic Destruction deck could benefit from more ‘ramp’ (trying to get land, or other ways to produce mana, out quickly). But there’s more ways to make use of that juicy extra mana than just casting dragons – you could look out for Kicker spells in Dominaria United (there’s dragons in that set too).

How do I choose which boosters to pick? Token Triumph

This deck vomits creatures – lots of them, most of them very squishy. But with all those creatures around you might be wanting to draft March of the Machine to use the ‘convoke’ mechanic – your creatures help you cast powerful spells – or look out for the ‘enlist’ mechanic in Dominaria United to get some synergy going with all those tokens.
